Koszeg

Hungary

Kőszeg, a compact town in western Hungary near the Austrian border, is one of the country's richest concentrations of historic monuments — a status it owes partly to the 1532 defence led by castle captain Miklós Jurisics, who repelled an Ottoman assault and spared the town the destruction that reshaped much of the region. The well-preserved historic centre sits in wine country with roots documented to 1279, and the surrounding Kőszeg Hills offer mountain terrain for those drawn to the outdoors.
