Kobarid
Slovenia
The 1917 Battle of Caporetto — the Italian retreat that Ernest Hemingway later fictionalised in A Farewell to Arms — was fought near this small Slovenian village in the Soča Valley, and a museum in the centre documents it in detail, winning a Council of Europe award in 1993. Set in the Julian Alps on the banks of the Soča river, Kobarid also offers mountain viewpoints, surrounding vineyards, and a café and restaurant scene that punches above its size.
