A port town on the Sanriku Coast of Miyagi Prefecture, Kesennuma is home to Japan's only shark museum, where visitors can try shark fin burgers alongside other local seafood specialities. The offshore island of Oshima, reached by ferry, offers beaches popular in summer and a lift up Kameyama with views over the island and city. Much of Kesennuma was destroyed by the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami.
