This coastal district on Istanbul's Asian shore with a dense café and restaurant scene and an unusual concentration of churches for its size, Kartal sits along the Marmara Sea between Maltepe and Pendik. Inland, the terrain rises sharply to the Aydos and Yakacık hills — the former being Istanbul's highest point — offering elevated views over the city and sea. The wider region holds several UNESCO World Heritage sites within reach.
