One of the best-preserved old town centres in the Netherlands, Kampen sits on the lower IJssel river in Overijssel, its walkable historic core dense with listed buildings, medieval churches, and remnants of the ancient city wall — three of its gates still standing. A former Hanseatic League member that ranked among the largest towns in the northern Netherlands between the 14th and 16th centuries, the town also retains a working windmill and three bridges spanning the IJssel.
