Janitzio
Mexico
Janitzio is a modest island village on Lake Pátzcuaro in Michoacán, Mexico, reached by a roughly 25-minute boat ride from the town of Pátzcuaro. It draws large crowds for Day of the Dead celebrations and is known for its butterfly fishermen, who use distinctive net-shaped like wings to catch pescado blanco, a freshwater fish endemic to the lake. The island's fishermen were once depicted on the 50-peso banknote, and the island inspired Silvestre Revueltas's 1933 orchestral composition of the same name.
