Iruya
Iruya · Argentina
Founded in 1753 high on the eastern slopes of the Sierra de Santa Victoria in Salta Province, Iruya is a little Argentine town surrounded on two sides by the Milmahuasi and Colanzulí rivers, giving it the feel of a mountain island. Its narrow cobbled streets, adobe houses, and sweeping panoramic views draw independent travellers, and the pre-Columbian ruins of the Pucara de Titiconte lie a short distance to the northeast. The town was declared a National Historic Site in 1995 and sits within the Yungas Biosphere Reserve.
