Iquique
Iquique · Chile
A port city on Chile's northern Pacific coast, Iquique is one of only two free ports in the country, home to the ZOFRI duty-free zone — one of the largest free-trade areas in South America. The city grew during the 19th-century saltpetre boom in the Atacama Desert and was taken by Chile from Peru during the War of the Pacific. Its name derives from an Aymara phrase meaning "land of dreams," and its centre has a walkable café and restaurant scene alongside a stretch of resort hotels along the beach.
