Huancayo

Peru

Founded on 1 June 1572 as Santísima Trinidad de Huancayo, this large highland city in Peru's central Mantaro Valley sits high in the Andes and is crossed by three rivers — the Shullcas, Chilca, and Mantaro. The economic and social centre of central Peru, it has a dense café and restaurant scene and a concentration of historic churches. The area was home to the Huanca people from around 500 BC, later incorporated into the Inca Empire as a stop along the Qhapaq Ñan, the route now called Calle Real.
