The gateway city to Hạ Long Bay — a UNESCO-listed natural heritage site off its southern shore — this city in Quảng Ninh province sits on the bay's edge with a walkable centre full of cafés and restaurants and mountain country rising nearby. Formed in 1993 from the merger of Hòn Gai and the tourist district of Bãi Cháy, it sits roughly a few hours east of Hà Nội by road.
