Gualan
Guatemala
A town in eastern Guatemala's Zacapa department where the Motagua River runs through, Gualan sits on the Atlantic highway route that follows the old Northern Railway corridor — a line completed in 1908 and once operated by a United Fruit Company subsidiary. The town's name derives from a Nahuatl word meaning "place of Yaje trees," and it lies within reach of the mountains of the wider Zacapa region, with UNESCO World Heritage sites in the surrounding area.
