Gera

Birthplace of the painter Otto Dix in 1891, Gera is a Thuringian city on the White Elster river whose centre retains buildings from its royal residence era as capital of the Principality of Reuss-Gera, alongside a dense run of public and private architecture from its textile-industry heyday between 1870 and 1930. More than a hundred grand villas and Gründerzeit buildings survive from the period when Gera ranked among Germany's wealthiest cities. The wider Thuringian region holds several UNESCO World Heritage sites.
