Freiberg
Mittelsachsen · Germany
Freiberg's entire historic centre — known as the Silver City — has been under monument protection since long before the town's mining heritage earned UNESCO World Heritage status in 2019 as part of the Erzgebirge/Krušnohoří Mining Region. The cathedral ranks among Saxony's most richly furnished, housing two Gottfried Silbermann organs, a tulip pulpit, and the medieval Golden Gate, replicated in Moscow, Budapest, and Cambridge, Massachusetts. The Technische Universität Bergakademie Freiberg, founded in 1765, is the oldest mining and metallurgy university in the world. The town sits on the Freiberger Mulde at the foot of the Ore Mountains, with a rail connection to Dresden.
