This compact Westfjords hamlet sits directly on the water at the mouth of Önundarfjörður, with mountain scenery surrounding the fjord. Flateyri has been a trading post since the late 18th century and received official trading-post status in 1823. Its most distinctive feature is the oldest original shop in Iceland — a family-run store operating continuously since 1914, now in its fourth generation of the same family.
