Patagonian town in northwest Chubut Province, Esquel is the home station of La Trochita, the historic narrow-gauge railway known in English as the Old Patagonian Express, and a gateway to Los Alerces National Park, a UNESCO-protected reserve holding some of the oldest trees in South America. The town also has a ski area at La Hoya and a walkable centre with cafés and restaurants, making it the main service hub for this stretch of the Andean cordillera.
