A small village in the Cantabrian Mountains of northern Burgos province, Espinosa de los Monteros has a waterside setting and a café and restaurant scene that punches above its size. The village has a long history as a key passage between Cantabria and the Castilian plateau, and it holds the highest concentration of listed monuments in Burgos province outside the capital. It was also the birthplace of the Monteros de Espinosa, a royal guard corps that dates to the medieval period.
