Cordes-sur-Ciel
Tarn · France
Built in 1222 by Raymond VII, Count of Toulouse, on a ridge high enough above the Cérou valley to earn the name "sur-Ciel" (above the sky), this medieval fortified village in the Tarn is a member of Les Plus Beaux Villages de France. Its winding streets and Gothic houses sit on steep terrain with wide valley views, and an annual medieval festival on 14 July — the Grand Fauconnier — draws crowds in period costume. The village is also a stop on the Santiago de Compostela pilgrimage route.
