Corcyra was an ancient Greek city on the island of Corfu, founded as a Corinthian colony during the Archaic period and positioned as a key port for ships sailing west toward Italy and beyond. According to Thucydides, it was the site of the earliest recorded naval battle in history — fought against Corinth in the mid-7th century BC — and ranked alongside Athens and Corinth as one of the three great naval powers of 5th-century BC Greece.
