Mount Jiuhua, one of the four sacred mountains of Chinese Buddhism, sits within Chizhou's boundaries in southern Anhui Province, making this large Yangtze-side city a base for pilgrimage and mountain travel. The city also holds Shengjin Lake and the nature reserve at Guniujiang among its scenic areas, and the Qiupu River runs through its centre toward the Yangtze, whose southern bank Chizhou occupies.
