A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1985, Chavín de Huántar preserves a major pre-Inca ceremonial complex built from around 1500 BC at the confluence of two rivers high in the Ancash region of Peru. The site's most striking features include a truncated pyramid known as El Castillo, an interior network of stone galleries lit only by shafts of light, and the Lanzón — a carved monolith depicting an anthropomorphic deity. A national museum in the town holds additional finds from the site.
