Charalá, a compact town in the south of Colombia's Santander department, carries the title "Cradle of the Liberty of America" for its role in the Comunero Revolution, and was the birthplace of independence figures José Antonio Galán and José Acevedo y Gómez. The Battle of Pienta was fought here on 4 August 1819. The compact centre has cafés, restaurants, and several churches, with mountains close by.
