Founded in 1570 as Villa de la Purísima Concepción de Zalaya — a Basque word meaning "flat land" — Celaya is a city in the state of Guanajuato, Mexico, with a walkable centre dense with historic churches, cafés, and restaurants. It sits in the geographic heart of the Laja-Bajío metropolitan area and is ringed by UNESCO World Heritage sites across the wider region, including the nearby city of Querétaro.
