Built over and around one of antiquity's most storied archaeological sites, this commune east of Tunis holds the ruins of ancient Carthage alongside the Tunisian presidential palace on the coast. Six stations of the TGM train line connect the area, each named for figures and places from the ancient city — Hannibal, Byrsa, Salammbo — making the ruins unusually accessible. Sidi Bou Said lies just to the north, and the wider region is ringed by UNESCO World Heritage sites.
