Sitting on the north bank of the Río Negro, Carmen de Patagones is the southernmost city in Buenos Aires province and the only part of that province that belongs to Patagonia. The river separates it from Viedma, the capital of Río Negro province, and the two towns together form a cross-river comarca within easy reach of the Atlantic coast. The walkable centre has a concentration of historic churches, cafés, and restaurants, with scenic viewpoints over the river nearby.
