A waterfront municipality on Quebec's Gaspé Peninsula with a strong photographic profile, Caplan sits along Chaleur Bay in the Gaspésie–Îles-de-la-Madeleine region. The town's name likely derives from the capelin fish — or possibly from the Mi'kmaq word gaplanjetig, meaning "capelin" — and the area falls within reach of UNESCO World Heritage sites in the wider region. Incorporated in 1875 as the Parish Municipality of Saint-Charles-de-Caplan, it has operated under its current name since 1964.
