A large city in northern Rio de Janeiro state with a centre that holds many historic churches, Campos dos Goytacazes sits on the water and lies within reach of nearby mountains. Beyond its religious architecture, the city carries significant economic weight as a hub of Brazil's offshore oil industry — the P-51, the country's largest oil platform, operates in the adjacent Campos Basin — and it functions as the regional pole for the Norte Fluminense area.
