Cajamarca

Peru

Cajamarca is a highland city in the northern Andes of Peru where the 1532 capture and execution of the Inca emperor Atahualpa marked the fall of the Inca Empire — making it one of the most historically significant sites in South America. The walkable centre has a real café and restaurant scene alongside Spanish colonial religious architecture, and the surrounding valley is known for dairy production. Nearby hot springs at Baños del Inca and the pre-Hispanic archaeological complex of Cumbemayo add further reasons to visit, as does the city's celebrated carnival.
