A waterfront city at the far eastern tip of Java, Banyuwangi serves as the capital of its regency and has built a reputation as a festival city, with events running throughout the year. Mountains rise close to the urban area, and the regency as a whole functions as a tourist base. The town's administrative history dates to 1774, when it was first established as a regency seat.
