Banjarmasin, the largest city in South Kalimantan on the island of Borneo, is known as the City of a Thousand Rivers — a delta settlement spread across roughly two dozen pocket-sized islands separated by waterways at the confluence of the Barito and Martapura rivers. Historically the centre of Banjarese culture and the former capital of the Sultanate of Banjar, the city has a walkable centre with a lively café and restaurant scene and strong independent traveller infrastructure.
