Sitting on the left bank of the Guadiana river close to the Portuguese border, Badajoz is a city in Extremadura with a walkable centre dense with historic churches and cafés. Founded around 875, it became the seat of the Taifa of Badajoz in the 11th century — a noted centre of cultural production under the Aftasids — before passing to the Kingdom of León in 1230. Today it anchors a cross-border eurocity initiative linking it with the Portuguese towns of Elvas and Campo Maior.
