This rail junction town in Kazakhstan's Turkistan Region, Arys sits where the Trans-Aral Railway meets the Turkestan-Siberia line — a crossing that shaped the town from its founding around 1904 and still drives its economy through locomotive repair and rail-related industry. Several early 20th-century station buildings from 1902–1905 survive in the centre, alongside the agriculture-based economy of grain, cotton, and livestock that defines the wider region.
