The capital of Colombia's Quindío Department and a hub of the country's coffee-growing region, Armenia sits in mountain country with a dense café and restaurant scene and a historic centre whose coffee-cultural landscape was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2011. Founded in 1889 during the Antioquian colonisation, the city earned the nickname "Ciudad Milagro" — Miracle City — during the coffee boom of the mid-20th century, and remains a commercial and tourism centre in western Colombia.
