A waterfront town on the northern tip of Chiloé Island in southern Chile, Ancud has a walkable centre with cafés, restaurants, and a concentration of historic churches, plus scenic viewpoints over the surrounding water and mountains. Founded in 1768 as a colonial bulwark, it served as capital of the Chiloé Archipelago until 1982 and is typically the first stop for travellers arriving on the island from Puerto Montt.
