This rural coastal parish on the northwest shore of Terceira island in the Azores, Altares sits at the water's edge with the mountains of the Caldeira de Santa Bárbara rising to the south. One of the oldest parishes on the island, it was established before 1480 and lies within the municipality of Angra do Heroísmo, a short drive from a city whose historic centre is a UNESCO World Heritage site.
