Alfama
Grande Lisboa · Portugal
Lisbon's oldest neighborhood, Alfama spreads across the hillside between São Jorge Castle and the Tagus river, its name derived from the Arabic for 'hot springs.' The district is dense with fado bars, restaurants, and churches — including the Sé cathedral, Santo Estêvão, and São Vicente de Fora — and the viewpoints at Portas do Sol and Santa Luzia offer sweeping views over the rooftops. The neighborhood is also known for the popular Saints' festivals, particularly the night of Santo António on 12–13 June.
